Milburn Dwight FLEIG, 82, of rural Fairfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.
Following cremation, a visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Fairfield Walton Club on Thursday, June 28, 2012 beginning at 3 p.m. The presentation of colors and prayer will be held at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Van Buren County Hospital or the Alzheimer's Association. Cards and memorials can be sent to: Kaley Fleig at 308 Iowa Avenue, Fairfield, Iowa 52556.
Mr. FLEIG was born May 2, 1930 near Brighton, Iowa, the son of Leonard and LaRue FISCHER FLEIG. He lived most of his life in Jefferson County. He married Mary Elizabeth NEWLON on October 16, 1949. They divorced in 1970. Milburn married Cheriel WATSON NELSON on April 7, 1977.
Mr. FLEIG served in the Iowa Army National Guard for over 20 years as a Chief Warrant Officer. Mr. FLEIG farmed for many years near Libertyville, Iowa and also operated a livestock and grain trucking service. He and other Libertyville and Birmingham area farmers performed custom combining in the Dakota's (sic) each year. He combined for Lawrence Welk and his brother near Strasburg, North Dakota.
Mr. FLEIG was also a financial planner for over 30 years with The Principal Financial Group, formerly known as The Bankers Life Insurance Company in Des Moines.
He enjoyed farming, boating, fishing, golfing, horse racing and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include Cheriel FLEIG of rural Fairfield, who was by his side when he passed, ex-wife; Mary E. FLEIG of Fairfield, 3 sons: Roger (Carrie) FLEIG of Libertyville, Leonard (Kay) FLEIG of Lincoln, Nebraska and Kaley (Joni) FLEIG of Fairfield, 1 daughter: Marilyn (Casey) CANNON of Fairfield, 3 step-sons: Rodney (Beverly) NELSON of Libertyville, Matthew (Amy) NELSON of rural Fairfield and Corey NELSON of Fairfield, 1 step-daughter: Renae NELSON LISK (Jamie WEBB) of Coralville, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: William Lawrence FLEIG and Merrill Eugene FLEIG, 1 infant son: Ronald D. FLEIG and 1 step-son: Stacey NELSON.
