DIED.

SPIELMAN - On Sunday, Oct. 16, 1870, at the residence of her father, in Fairfield, of Typhoid Fever, Maggie SPIELMAN, aged 18 years, 8 months and 10 days.

Maggie was consecrated to God by baptism in childhood and was confirmed in the Lutheran church of this city, July 16th, 1870. She was an earnest Christian and a faithful worker in the Church and Sunday School with which she was connected. At home and in the social circle, she was always happy and cheerful, and hence, her loss will be doubly felt by those who knew her best. Still we trust that our present loss is her eternal gain. Notes: The given name is found as "Margaretha" in a SPIELMAN family history on file at the Fairfield Public Library. It would appear that "Maggie" was used as a nickname in her obituary and on her headstone inscription.

The DOD and Aged inscriptions on the SPIELMAN family monument for Maggie appear to have either been mis-engraved or, at a minimum, at variance with her obituary.

Her inscription gives her DOD as Sept. 16, 1869 and age at death of 18 years and 7 months.

However, her obituary was published on Nov. 3, 1870 and provides her DOD as Oct. 16, 1870 and aged 18 years, 8 months, 10 days.

It should be kept in mind that Evergreen cemetery was not established and did not have its first burial until May, 1870. Even if Maggie had died in 1869 and then was subsequently re-buried in Evergreen cemetery, the 1870 publication date of her obituary seems to be more credible and suggests that the inscription was mis-engraved.

Based on the obituary information, it would appear that Maggie was born in February, 1851 and died on October 16, 1870.
