Page 4, Column 4Tribute to comrade Ferdinand STORTZ... Born in Germany 1818 (sic - 1817), came to this country and settled at Germanville, Iowa, about 1857, and enlisted in Co. I, 17th Iowa Vol. Inft. March 20, 1862. He was a good soldier, but often said the American soldier has too much liberty... Since the war he, being a widower, has made his home with his eldest son William.... where he died Fri. Feb. 23, and was buried Sunday Feb. 25 in the cemetery one mile south east of Germanville. He was 82 years old and quite active and rugged for one of his years... Thus another of our nation’s defenders and valiant soldiers has gone to answer roll call over on the other side....
