WILLIAM STORTZ, born Oct. 29, 1845 in Villingen, Baden, Germany. His parents were FERDINAND STORTZ and his wife CLARA nee EVADINGER. When he was eight years old came to U. S. with his parents. They located in Philadelphia until 1861 when the settled in Walnut Township, Jefferson County, Iowa. In the third year of the Civil War he, not quite 18 years old, enlisted in the Union Army, serving in the 9th Iowa Cavalry about two years until he received his honorable discharge in February 1866. It was with the fiery enthusiasm of an old veteran that he spoke about the days spent in the camps of Arkansas and other states of the south. He is the last one of the “Boys in Blue” from Walnut Township. When the war drums ceased and after order had been restored in
the Southland he returned home to Jefferson County. July 15, 1867 married MARGARET MILLER whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life for over half a century. He moved to the last part of the farm where he has since lived. There he built the log cabin which is still standing. Here 12 children grew to manhood and womanhood, the oldest boy having died in infancy. Another son, FRANK, died a number of years ago…His wife died about six years ago…He died Nov. 22, aged 84 years 24 days…Lutheran cemetery, Germanville.

Note: HENRY W. SCHMADAKA, another of the Walnut Township “Boys in Blue’ was still living when the above was printed. He died Mar. 25, 1931, at his home in Pleasant Plain, and is buried Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield.
