Mrs. Anna Catherine SHONDEL, 66, West End Addition, who has been seriously ill for the past ten days, passed away around 11:45 p.m. last night at the Jefferson county hospital, where she was taken yesterday afternoon.
She was born May 8, 1877 in Van Buren county, Iowa.
Among the survivors are the following: four sons, Arthur and Clyde of Ottumwa, and Clarence and Ernest of Fairfield; two daughters, Mrs. Ellis DENNISON and Mrs. Nevada BARDLEY (sic. BRADLEY), both of Fairfield; one step-son, James of Fairfield, and twenty-one grandchildren.
She is also survived by two brothers, Henry HECKETHORN, Fairfield, and Norris HECKETHORN of California, and three sisters, Ollie SHONDEL, Centerville; Mrs. Lulu PARDIN, Springfield, Ill. and Mrs. Zenith PIERSON, Springfield, Ill.
Mrs. SHONDEL was preceded in death by her husband, Michael SHONDELL (sic. SHONDEL), a Civil War veteran, who passed away September 8, 1928. Two children and one grandson also preceded her in death.
The body has been taken to the Hoskins Funeral Home pending arrangements which will be announced later.
* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.
Note: Buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Lot 16, along the east edge of the cemetery, next to her husband Michael SHONDEL. The headstone has 1876-1943 for her DOB/DOD. The obituary has May 8, 1877 for her DOB. Age of 66 at time of death would be 1877 for DOB, so the headstone may have been mis-engraved (which happens all too often).
