Ila Naomi JOHNSON, 95, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at the home of her daughter Ruth JAECKEL in Tupelo, Miss.
Lee Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory of Verona, Miss., is in charge of cremation. Interment will be in Howard Grove Cemetery near Pleasant Plain.
Mrs. JOHNSON was born Feb. 24, 1902, in Pleasant Plain, the daughter of Harvey Coffin and Estella WIKOFF JONES. She married Elwood O. JOHNSON on June 2, 1928, at Greeley, Colo. The couple lived in Cheyenne, Wyo. He died Oct. 26, 1988. She graduated from Fairfield High School and Parsons College. She taught high school English and Latin in Tabor and Corydon; Greeley; and after 1954, at Casa Grande, Ariz. She retired from teaching in 1964. In 1984, she ahd her husband moved to Desert Crest Retirement Residence at Phoenix, Ariz. She had lived in Tupelo since 1992. She was a charter member of the United Methodist Church in Casa Grande in 1960. In 1967, she was a charter member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, Women Educators Society. A member of PEO Sisterhood Chapter BR in Iowa in 1947, she later moved her membership to Chapter BP in Arizona.
Survivors, in addition to JAECKEL, include two other daughters, Lael WELLINGTON of Phoenix and Kay WEEDE of Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dale JONES; and sister, Lucile SCHMITTER.
