Joseph J. KURTZ
Joseph J. KURTZ, prominent farmer of Walnut township, died Thursday night at 11:30 oclock at his home 5 miles southeast of East Pleasant Plain after being in failing health with heart trouble for several months.
The funeral services were held this morning at 9 oclock from the Polishville Catholic church in charge of Rev. J. Kopczynski and Rev. H. Sandbuehler with burial in the cemetery nearby. The church was filled with relatives and friends who paid their last tribute to this highly respected man.
Mr. KURTZ was 69 years old and he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John KURTZ and was born and reared in Walnut township. He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Mary ARNDT, and the following children: Mrs. Frank KASOWSKI of Fairfield, Mrs. John SOBASKI, Mrs. Joseph SOBASKI, William KURTZ ,Hubert KURTZ (sic) and Theodore KURTZ of the East Pleasant Plain vicinity and Barney KURTZ of Milwaukee, Wis. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Peter KURTZ of East Pleasant Plain, John KURTZ of Germanville, Frank KURTZ of East Pleasant Plain, Peter KURTZ and Mrs. Jacob KESSELL of East Pleasant Plain, Mrs. Dan MANHARDT of Davenport and Mrs. Lizzie FRITZ of West Burlington and Tony KURTZ, who address (sic) is not known.
Fred ARNDT of Emporia, Kans., a brother of Mrs. KURTZ was among those called here to attend the funeral.

BRIGHTON ENTERPRISE, Thurs. May 1, 1930 (1-4).
Joseph J. KURTZ, well known and respected citizen of Jefferson County, died Apr. 24 age 69 y. 6 m. at his home six miles south of Brighton. He was born in Walnut township near Germanville July 5, 1860, and lived in the community since. Married Aug. 27, 1885 Mary ARNDT who with seven children and eight grandchildren are left to mourn. They are: Will, Mrs. Joe SOBASKI, Mrs. John SOBASKI of East Pleasant Plain vicinity, Bernard of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Frank KASOWSKI of Fairfield, Theodore at home, and Hubert of Mt. Pleasant. One daughter, Clara Louise, preceded him in death. Also survived by the following brothers and sisters: John, Frank and Pete KURTZ of East Pleasant Plain, and Mrs. Jacob KESSEL of East Pleasant Plain, Anthony of Osage, Iowa, Mrs. Elizabeth FRITZ of Burlington, Iowa, and Mrs. D. W. MANNHARDT of Davenport. Funeral Monday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Mary’s church; burial in adjoining cemetery.
