Jefferson county is again sadden (sic) by the receipt in two Pleasant Plain homes of official notice from Washington, D. C., that their sons had died in the service of their country. Alexander DRISH was killed in action in France Sept. 26, and Hubert ARNDT died on board ship enroute to France from pneumonia on October 13th.
Alexander DRISH was 25 years of age and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John DRISH of Pleasant Plain. He left Fairfield with the group of selective service men on May 13, last, going to Camp Dodge for training. He was a member of the Engineers Company, 88th Division
Hubert ARNDT was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William ARNDT, also of Pleasant Plain and left here with the July 31st increment of selective army men, going to Camp Forrest, Ga. The message received last night by his parents states that he died Oct. 13th on the high seas, being so near 12th on the high seas, being so near England (sic) that the body was taken there and later transported to France for burial.
Mr. ARNDT is said to have been the best specimen of physical perfection that has been sent from the county.

WAS BROTHER OF MRS. JOE MELINSKY AND WALTER DRISH OF WASHINGTON.Mr. and Mrs. John DRISH of East Pleasant Plain received an official message from the war department yesterday evening telling of the death of their son, Private Alexander DRISH, aged 24 years, who was killed in action in France Sept. 26.
He was a brother of Mrs. Joe MELINSKY and of Walter DRISH, who lives at the MELINSKY home here. Another sister, Miss Barbara, formerly lived in Washington, but is now at Davenport. Other relatives live at Pleasant Plain.
Private DRISH went with a Jefferson county contingent to Waco, Tex., leaving Iowa on May 14. There he was assigned to Company L, 55th Infantry, and after being in the Texas camp for six weeks was sent to Camp Merritt, N.J., leaving that camp for France on July 21.
He was transferred to Company D, 102nd infantry, with which unit he served in France against the Germans. In his last letter written on Sept. 19, he told of having been "over the top" once and was in some hard fighting.
Particulars as to his death are lacking, but relatives hope to receive details in letters from his comrades soon. He was a splendid young man, well known and well liked in his home community, and was a good soldier.
