C. L. BENGE PASSES AWAY

C. L. BENGE, 61, well known retired merchant, passed away Thursday evening at 9:50 p.m at the Jefferson county hospital, after suffering a stroke Tuesday morning.

Mr. BENGE was the son of the late Henry and Laura BENGE and was born June 20, 1883, in Davis county, Iowa. He was married January 16, 1926 to Rosa HAWBAKER. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Loran SMITH, of Fairfield, and four grandchildren.

Mr. BENGE was a resident of this community for over 32 years. For 16 years he owned and operated the Benge Coal and Ice Company and was forced to retire a year ago because of ill health. He was a member of the Christian church

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Weston Behner Funeral Home. Rev. C. T. Wiese will officiate and burial will be at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.

Note: Charles ("Charley" on his gravestone) is buried in Lot Memorial 40, Space 1. Second wife Rosa would remarry, to Arthur Delbert KING, and she died in 1967. She is buried with Charles, in Space 2. Although Charles' obituary states he was born in 1883, and census records support this as well as his given age at death, his gravestone has his birth year as 1873.

The daughter mentioned was Helen Elizabeth BENGE SMITH, a child of Charles and his first wife Ada Pearl LEWIS BENGE [1893-1981] (they divorced in 1920 and Ada remarried to Frank B. MILLER - Ada and Frank are buried in KS); Helen and husband Loran are buried in Miller Chapel Cemetery in Van Buren Co., IA.
