Phyllis PUMPHREY, 89, of Batavia, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
Arrangements are pending at Kremer Funeral Chapel in Batavia.

Phyllis PUMPHREY, 89, of Batavia died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield, Iowa. She was born December 13, 1921 to Milo Searle and Gladys MILLER MITCHELL. Milo died. Mar. 23, 1923. Gladys married George CURRAY Apr. 7, 1928. Gladys and George raised Phyllis, Jean, Pearl and Tom on their farm near the Hickory Ridge School north of Batavia. Phyllis graduated from Fairfield High School in 1939 -- she later graduated from Parsons College and Ottumwa Business School. On May 23, 1943 Phyllis and Richard PUMPHREY were united in marriage at the Willard Street Methodist Church in Ottumwa. Richard died February 16, 1992. She taught country school in Jefferson County and later worked for the Cardinal Community School district -- serving as a substitute teacher and secretary. Phyllis retired in 1983 from the Union Bank & Trust. She belonged to the Retired Teachers Association and attended the Batavia Methodist Church. Her family especially remembers how important supporting the local school district was to their mother. Left to cherish her memory are 3 sons, Robert (Kathy) PUMPHREY -- Eldon, John (Janet) PUMPHREY -- Fargo, North Dakota, and James (Cindy) PUMPHREY -- Hastings, Minnesota, 7 grandchildren, Steve, Ronnie, Tara, Jonathan, Cassandra, Roslyn, Jaclyn and 6 great grandchildren. Phyllis is also survived by her siblings, Tom (Shirley) CURRAY -- Ankeny, and Pearl NEIL -- Batavia, and several nieces and nephews. Her sister Jean HAILE of Packwood, passed away on July 29, 2011.
In honoring Phyllis's wishes her family will have a private family burial at the Batavia Cemetery. On Saturday, Aug. 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. you are invited to join us at the Batavia Community Center in remembering Phyllis. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left in her honor to Hospice of Jefferson County, Batavia Fire Dept, Cardinal High School Band Dept, and the Batavia Methodist Church. Kremer Funeral Chapel of Batavia is assisting with arrangements.
