Note: The John HOPKIRK Burial Ground is in the lawn at the old John HOPKIRK homestead at the east edge of the town of Lockridge (Sec. 36, Lockridge Twp.) -- place now occupied by a Mr. Winsett, who hails from Kentucky. Nov. 14, 1962. Mr. Winsett states that he has been told that several persons were buried there, but only one name is engraved on the west face of the tall marble shaft:

JOHN HOPKIRK, Born in Scotland Ap'l 1, 1809,
Died June 28, 1875.

From her obituary, it would appear that John HOPKIRK's wife, Jane NICHOLSON or NICHOLAS, was buried beside him:

A GOOD WOMAN GONE.

Mrs. Jane NICHOLAS HOPKIRK, a pioneer resident of Jefferson County, died on the homestead farm at Lockridge Jan. 11th, 1901, at the advanced age of ninety-one years. She was born in a fine old English house surrounded with all the comforts that thoughtful and loving parents could bestow. This beautiful home was called "Stubhouse," a portion of the estate of the Earl of Harewood, near Leeds, England. Her father died when she was five years old, the youngest of eight children, and, unequal to the task of managing so large an estate, the mother moved into the city of Leeds, where she resided with her children many years, then removed to London, where they lived three years, and then sailed for America. Theirs was a tempestuous voyage of seven weeks. Three years they lived at Waterville, N.Y., then three years at Cincinnati, O., after which, in 1830, they removed to what was then the "far west," and found a home near what is now Four Corners. In May, 1852 (sic - 19 May 1842 per Jefferson County Marriages), the subject of our sketch was married to John HOPKIRK, and they at once began home life on the farm at Lockridge, which was her home for fifty-nine years. Mrs. HOPKIRK was the mother of three sons, Wm., John and David, and of two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice W. SNOW, and Mrs. Isabel SAMPSON, all of whom attended their mother's funeral. Rev. James G. Barton, assisted by Rev. S. T. Horton and A. R. Toothacre, conducted the funeral services at the Lockridge church, and the loved one was laid to rest beside the husband of her youth, who twenty-five years ago preceded her to that land where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.....
