T. F. HIGLEY, OLD RESIDENT OT CITY, DIED LAST NIGHT AT 6:45

T. F. HIGLEY a well known resident of this city passed away last evening about six forty-five, at his home, 307 East Briggs, following an illness of several weeks. He has been in poor health for the past several years suffering from a complication of diseases.

Theodore F. HIGLEY was the son of Daniel and Nancy BENTLEY HIGLEY, and was born in Jamestown, Chautauqua county New York, March 21st, 1839. When about six months old his parents moved to Ogle county, Illinois. He received his education in Mt. Morris Seminary and soon after the firing upon Fort Sumter he enlisted, in May, 1861 as a member of Company H 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He served for one year during which time he participated in the battle of Shiloh and then was discharged on account of physical disability. In December 1863, he re-enlisted as a member of the Fourth Illinois Cavalry and was assigned to Company D, but later his regiment was consolidated with the Twelfth Illinois Cavalry in which he served until April 1865. He then was mustered into the Third U.S. Heavy Artillery, in which he served until the close of the war. He was mustered out of the service at Memphis, Tennessee, November 28 1865. His service was in the western part entirely and he took part in many of the important battles and skirmishes.

From Memphis Mr. HIGLEY went to Mt. Pleasant where his family had moved during the time he was serving in the army. In 1866 he came to Fairfield where he and his brother, Daniel, purchased a drug store. He continued in that line of business until 1880. After disposing of his interest in the drug store he was in the employ of the city for a number of years. In 1882 he was elected City Clerk and also superintendent of the city water works. He served in this capacity for a number of years. Later he was agent for the American Express Co., and held that position until failing health made it necessary for him to give up active work a few years ago.

On January 9th 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Ella McELHINNEY (sic. McELHINNY). To this union were born five children. September 8, 1886, Mrs. HIGLEY passed away. On June 5th, 1889 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Jennie C. BONER, who with three of the children, Mrs. Helen SHULAR, Robert and Theodore HIGLEY, survive him.

The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at ten o'clock from the home on East Briggs St., in charge of Rev. H.A. Mosser. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
