Obituary.

Edward DAVIES, whose death was announced in these columns last Friday, was born in Wales, on Sept. 2, 1816. In 1849 he left his native land and came to this country, coming to Fairfield, but he soon returned to Wales to bring his family over and upon his arrival with his family, located in Burlington, where he remained for a few years when he again came to this county, settling on a farm in Black Hawk township which was his home until 1885, when he moved into this city. He united with the M. E. church in his native land, and preached some, but after coming to this country he united with the Congregational church, in which faith he died. He leaves a wife, two sons and several grandchildren to mourn their loss. Mr. DAVIES was a man, highly esteemed by all who knew him. Always pleasant and cheerful, with a kind word for everybody, and will be greatly missed by all.

The funeral was held at the Congregational church Sabbath afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. F. Marsh and the remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery.

A Venerated Citizen Gone.

Death came and claimed an old and venerated citizen Friday morning, March 4th, 1898, at 7:30 o'clock. Edward DAVIES was born in Hawarden, county of Flint, Wales, September 2d, 1816, where he spent the years of his youth and early manhood. At the age of twenty-three, on the 23rd of February 1838, he was united in marriage to Ellen WRIGHT, who survives him. Four children were born of this union - John, Joseph, Thomas and Mary Ellen. Joseph and Mary Ellen died young and rest in the old churchyard in their native village. John and Thomas live here amongst us. In early manhood Mr. DAVIES was converted and joined the Methodist church and served it as a local preacher. In 1849 he came with two brothers to the United States, taking up his residence in our city. In a short time he returned to England after his family and for four or five years resided in Burlington. He then moved to a farm in Blackhawk township, this county, and remained there until October 1885, when he again took up his residence in this city, and has since lived here. While on his farm he thouroughly identified himself with all the interests of our county. He joined the Congregational church under the ministry of Rev. Jos. Cooper. Being an ardent abolitionist he took an active part in politics and was honored by his fellow citizens by election to several offices, serving during the stirring war time as a member of the board of supervisors. He took a great interest in educational affairs, being an earnest friend of our public schools. He did all in his power in the early days of our present school system to help shape and mold it. After a life of great activity and industry the last four years were spent in the enjoyment of a well earned rest. During the past year health and strength generally failed him until the morning of March 4th, at the age of eighty-two, when he passed to that "bourne from whence no traveler returns," there to meet that kind Father in whose worship he had been engaged in for so many years. The funeral took place from the Congregational church at at 2:00 o'clock p.m., Sunday, March 6th. The services were conducted by Rev. A. F. Marsh and the remains taken for interment to the Evergreen cemetery. Many friends joined the relatives in paying the last sad rites of affection and love to a worthy man.

Death of Edward DAVIES.

After a long and useful life, Edward DAVIES, an old resident of Jefferson county, passed away at his home in this city last Friday morning at half past seven o'clock. He was eighty-one years six months and two days old.

Mr. DAVIES was born in Hawarden, Wales, September 1 (sic - 2nd), 1816. He was married to Miss Ellen WRIGHT in Liverpool, England, on February 26, 1838, and they made their home in Wales, where he was engaged in general merchandise business. Here four children were born to them, two dying in infancy. Of the others John is now cashier in the Iowa State Savings Bank, of this place, and Thomas lives on the old homestead in Blackhawk township. In 1849 Mr. DAVIES came to America, remaining for one year in Fairfield and then returning to England for his family. On arriving in this country they first located in Burlington, this state, where Mr. DAVIES worked at his trade, that of a blacksmith, four or five years. From there he removed to this county and purchased a farm in Blackhawk township. In 1886 he removed to this city and since then has lived a retired and quiet life.

Mr. DAVIES was a man of the highest character and belonged to the best type of citizenship. During the years between 1862 and 1865 he was a member of the board of supervisors, and has also held various township offices, such as assessor and treasurer of the Blackhawk township school board, for about twenty years. He was well known over the county and his death will be deeply deplored by his many friends.

The funeral took place from the Congregational church, of which he was a member, at two o'clock last Sunday afternoon, and (sic) was very largely attended. Rev. A. F. March (sic - Marsh) conducted the services.
