April 27, 1910George W. REED Is Dead
George W. REED, a resident of Fairfield since 1866, died here Friday evening at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frank N. SIMMONS. He was a native of Illinois, born at Jacksonville April 13th, 1836, and was married in that state to Philinda NOTT, who survives him. They were the parents of eight children, six of whom are now living. They are Mrs. SIMMONS, Mrs. George SAMMONS (sic. correct spelling should be SAMONS), Mrs. Charles LEE, Mrs. Al HARPER, Mrs. Wm. LEATHERS and Perrin REED, all in this county. Mr. REED became totally blind through disease a short time after his marriage, but, in spite of this handicap, he was an active and industrious man during his younger years and did all that a man in his condition could do to properly rear a family. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the SIMMONS home, Rev. Lewis MENDENHALL conducting the exercises.

Note: The headstone for George W. REED in SDiv.4-005 at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa has the death year engraved as being 1911. This contributor has found the legal death record at the Jefferson County courthouse, and along with this 1910 obituary published it is evident that the headstone date was mis-engraved and not corrected. The correct death date for George W REED was April 22, 1910.
The widow, Philinda Nott REED, later remarried to Robert Michael PARSONS and they are buried at Evergreen Cemetery as well.
