Emily Georgia SAMONS, 72, 1011 Harrison Ave., Burlington, died Friday at 3 p.m. at the Jefferson County Hospital where she had been a patient the past month.
She had been in failing health the pastyear and serious for three months.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 2, at 3 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Hickman officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Emily Georgia SAMONS was born May 9, 1901, in Jefferson County in the Cross Lanes Community, the daughter of George and Nadine READ (sic. correct surname should be REED) SAMONS. She was reared and educated in rural Jefferson County and Batavia schools.
She graduated from Parsons College with a B.A. degree, received her M.A. degree from Drake University and her special education degree from the University of Iowa.
Miss SAMONS taught in Davenport schools from 1948 to 1953 and at Burlington from 1953 until her retirement in 1965.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, life member of the Iowa State Education Association and National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and recently served as state director of the Iowa Retired Teachers Association. She also served as liason officer in the National Retired Teachers Association and was a member of the State Commission on the Aging.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Herman LUNDQUIST (sic. O. Marie SAMONS LUNDQUIST), Fairfield; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
