SCHEELER, Donald Eugene 'Doc' -- Donald Eugene "Doc" SCHEELER, 85, of Brighton, died at 2:33 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2010, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Brighton United Church, with the Rev. Sallie Graves and the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Burial will be in Brighton's Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials to the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department or Brighton United Church may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at 1107 E. Adams, Washington, IA 52353.

Mr. SCHEELER was born June 12, 1924, in Dunlap, Ill., the son of John and Myrtle I. BATEMAN SCHEELER. He married Alice M. DIMON Jan. 26, 1946, in Peoria, Ill.

Mr. SCHEELER attended schols in the Dunlap and Peoria, Ill., area before enlisting in the United States Army and serving in the European Theater. He and his wife moved to rural Brighton in 1949. Mr. SCHEELER was a livestock buyer; he worked closely with his brother in livestock trucking and at the Washington Livestock Auction Barn. He also farmed until he retired in 1999. He and his wife moved into Brighton in 2005 and to Halcyon House in Washington in June 2009. Mr. SCHEELER had been in failing health.

He was a member of Brighton United Church, Brighton Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Pithias (sic), Isaac Walton League, Brighton School Board, Brighton Volunteer Fire Department and American Legion Post No. 504.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Linda COLBERT and husband John of Washington; three sons, Gary SCHEELER and wife Phyllis of Brighton, Jim SCHEELER of Altoona and Tom SCHEELER of Winterset; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

His parents and his brother Jack preceded him in death.
