OBITUARY

John Clapp was born in Guilford county, North Carolina, Jan. 1st, 1810, and died at his home near Cambria, Iowa, May 15th, 1899. He was married September 10th, 1835, to Jane M. Phipp with whom he lived for sixty-four years and raised a family of fourteen children, nine of whom are living, six daughters and three sons. Six of the children were present at the funeral conducted by W.C. Smith, at the home, in the presence of a large audience of neighbors and friends. John Clapp lived the first twenty-eight years of his life in North Carolina, the next sixteen years in Jennings county, Indiana and the last forty-five year in Iowa, two years in Jefferson county and forty-three years in Wayne County. When a young man he joined the Presbyterian church and held this relation as long as he lived. In an early day and for years he would hitch up the wagon and take his family to Corydon to church a distance of ten miles. If the weather or roads were to bad for the family, he would go by himself on horseback, to fill his place in the church on the Sabbath day. He was a faithful church member and a devoted christian man all his life. No church duty was neglected. He kept up family prayer in his home as long as he was able and after he became too feeble to attend to his church duties as he used to do he would sit in his home and sing the old church hyms of his earlier life. The end came suddenly. He was sick only a few hours, was able to walk out in the yeard during he day and died the same evening at 11 o'clock. He was a kind neighbor and highly respected by all who knew him. After a long and useful life he has gone to his reward. The aged widow and family have the sympathy of the neighbors and friends.
