June 18, 1902A Good Man Gone
John SANDS died in this city at noon Thursday. He had been ill for some time with rheumatism and complications arising from old age, and had been confined to the house for several months. Mr. SANDS was born in Washington county, Penn., June 21st, 1820. When a child he removed with his parents to Harrison county, O., where he attained his majority, and was married to Nancy LYONS in October, 1841, locating in Washington county, and to this county in 1882. After living on a farm west of the city for many years, it came to this city (sic. wording off in original obituary). Mr. SANDS was the father of six children, four of whom are living, Robert C. and Miss Margaret SANDS of this city, Mrs. Jason MARTIN and Mrs. J.P. DAWSON in Henry county. All the children except Mrs. DAWSON were present at the funeral, and members of her family were there. Mr. SANDS had been a member of Presbyterian church since young manhood and his entire life was consistent with his faith. His honesty and integrity were never called in question and he discharged every duty which came to him in a long life faithfully and conscientiously. His aged wife and members of the family greatfully (sic. gratefully)appreciate the kindnesses which were shown him and them during his long illness. The remains were interred in this Saturday morning, Rev. E. L. Coombs conducting the funeral services.

NOTE:
John SANDS died on June 12, 1902. The obituary for him was not published until the following edition of the Fairfield Ledger on June 18, 1902.The obituary transcribed above refers to "....His aged wife ...." in the present tense. However, his wife Nancy LYONS SANDS had died in 1897. At this point there isn't any known evidence that John SANDS had remarried, so probably the obituary reference amounts to creative writing on the part of the Ledger writer who penned the obituary. Any clarification would be appreciated.
Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Plot: SDof17-014. His wife, Nancy, and a grandson Harry F. SANDS (1882-1918) are also in this plot.
