NELSON, Steven Dale -- Steven Dale NELSON, 56, of rural Farmington, died at 8:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at home.

A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cantril Christian Church, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial, with military rites performed by Russell-Straight Post No. 483, will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial will be designated by the family at a later date. Gifts to the memorial may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at 2216 Seventh Ave., Moline, IL 61265.

Mr. NELSON was born July 17, 1953, in Keosauqua, the son of Peter and Irene FINDLAY NELSON. He married Dianna SMITH in 1975. They later divorced.

Mr. NELSON graduated from Fox Valley High School in Milton in 1971. He earned an associate's degree from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa in 1973.

Mr. NELSON served 19 years in the United States Army and retired as a sergeant first class.

He was a Christian.

Mr. NELSON loved his family and country. He enjoyed the outdoors, horses and mechanics.

Survivors include two daughters, Ella Mae McCALLUM and husband David and Amanda NELSON of Moline, Ill.; two grandchildren; his father of Farmington; his mother of Cantril; four sisters, Victoria HUGHES of Cantril, Malinda NELSON of Pulaski, Laura NELSON of Keosauqua and Karla NELSON of Keosauqua; and one brother, Peter NELSON Jr. of New London.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Pamela NELSON.
