STRONG, Carol D. -- Carol D. STRONG, 81, of Des Moines passed away peacefully Sunday evening, May 24, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from complications of Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home. Burial of cremated remains will be in her family cemetery overlooking the Susquehanna River in Watsontown, PA.

Carol was born December 23, 1927, in Watsontown to Cecil and Ione DAWSON. Her father died when she was a child and Carol was raised by her mother in White Plains, NY. She married her childhood sweetheart, Dr. Kirk H. STRONG and lived in Fairfield, IA, most of her adult life. Later Carol moved to Des Moines to be closer to family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and brother. She is survived by 3 sons: Harry (Ginny) of Des Moines; Wayne of Tucson, AZ; and Wendell (Sabrina) of Urbandale. She is also survived by grandchildren: Abigail and William of Des Moines; Jenifer (Ian) BURNETT of Tucson, AZ; Justin (Amanda) BASTEEN of Des Moines, David (Bernice) serving with the military in Washington, D.C.; Leslie, and Jason (Larissa) of Fairfield, IA. She was also survived by 7 great grandchildren.

Carol was very active in Jefferson County Republican politics, the First Presbyterian Church, her PEO chapter, her sorority and especially active as a volunteer at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.
