SHAFER, D. Joan -- D. Joan SHAFER, 85, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Fairfield, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mount Pleasant.
A funeral has been tentatively scheduled for Monday morning at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
Visitation is tentatively scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

SHAFER, Joan -- Joan SHAFER, 85, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Fairfield, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mount Pleasant.
A service was held at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or National Alzheimer's Association. Condolences may be sent to PO Box 848, Mount Pleasant.
Mrs. SHAFER was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Libertyville, the daughter of Lloyd and Nellie MORRIS HESTON. She married Jake SHAFER Aug. 23, 1943, at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Fairfield.
Mrs. SHAFER was a member of the girls' basketball team that played in the regional championship game. She graduated from Libertyville High School and took normal training for teachers. She taught for two years in the former Vega I School in Glasgow. Mrs. SHAFER and her husband were business partners most of their married life, starting with one of the first Ferguson Tractor dealerships in the country in 1946. During the 1960s, the business evolved into Shafer Ford with headquarters in Mount Pleasant. During the '70s and '80s, the SHAFERs operated J&J Motors in Mount Pleasant.
As a top American Motors Dealership, the SHAFERs won a trip to China in the early 1980s. They traveled extensively throughout the United States in their recreational vehicle.
Mrs. SHAFER was a team leader for Mary Kay Cosmetics and was recognized as one of the top beauty consultants in the nation. Retiring in the late '80s, the SHAFERs built J&J Camping west of Mount Pleasant.
Mrs. SHAFER was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include her husband; three children: Judith SORENSON and husband Jack of Marshalltown, Jerry SHAFER of LaFayette, Ind., and Jayne JORDAN of Eldon; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Vivian WATSON and Joyce VORHIES.
