HOENSHEL, Jack Emery -- Jack Emery HOENSHEL, 79, of Shenandoah, died Tuesday evening, May 6, 2008, at home.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Haines Cemetery near Centerville.

Family visitation will be tonight at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah.

Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church in Shenandoah.

Mr. HOENSHEL was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Birmingham, the son of Wendell and Ada Belle MOSS HOENSHEL.

Mr. HOENSHEL graduated from Birmingham High School in 1945 and from Parsons College in 1949. He received his master's degree from Truman State University and did more graduate work at University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

Mr. HOENSHEL served in the United States Army, Signal Corps from 1951-1953 as a cryptographer during the Korean War. He began his teaching career at Hastings in 1949. After the service, he was a teacher and coach in Hillsboro then Denmark, Iowa, where he later was superintendent. He was superintendent in Pocahontas for nine years, Centerville for 20 years, Nishna Valley for two years and Farragut for five years. He retired from school positions in 1997.

Mr. HOENSHEL served on the Iowa High School Athletic Association board, the Girls Athletic Union board and the State Music board. He has been honored by the Hall of Pride in Des Moines for his service on the boards.

Mr. HOENSHEL's primary hobby was golfing.

Survivors include his wife, Becky; three children, Peggy KEELE and husband Mark of Cedar Rapids, Scott HOENSHEL and wife Niki of Houston, Texas, and Wendy HARTSOCK and husband Tom of Creston; five grandchildren; his first wife, Jean GREEN of Tucson, Ariz., and Red Oak; three stepchildren, David Den HARTOG and wife Rachel of Prescott, Ariz., John Den HARTOG and wife Stephanie of Hopkins, Minn., and Bob Den HARTOG of London, England; six stepgrandchildren; and one brother, Jerry HOENSHEL of Bella Vista, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wendell Jr.; and one sister, Martha Lee DUNN.
