"Fairfield Ledger", February 27, 1868

Departed this life, Feb. 6th, 1868, Mrs. Jane HEMPHILL, who with her husband Mr. Adley HEMPHILL, had resided for the last twenty five years one and a half miles south of Fairfield. Mrs. HEMPHILL lived to a good old age, having reached her seventy-ninth year. She filled the measure of her days to a better advantage than falls to the common lot of woman. She was married to Mr. HEMPHILL in her twenty-fifth year, with whom she shared the duties and blessings of life for fifty-four years. She was permitted to see her children, to the number of seven, grow up like olive plants around her table, until some called away to a better land, and others marrying, one by one separated and formed families of their own, till children’s children delighted to bless her name; and oft in joyful bands came back to cheer the hours of the old homestead. Early in life she consecrated herself to the service of God, uniting with the Presbyterian church, in the communion of which she continued till death.--- Her life was one of unostentatious piety, such as seldom fails to leave its fragrance behind on all with whom it has come into contact, as wife, mother, or friend. When it seemed as though life’s objects were all accomplished, she was gently dismissed and called from labor to reward. Having taken cold and becoming ill, she said: “This is my last sickness, I shall now be taken away.” And in three days after, rising in the bed and taking some refreshment, she lay herself back upon her pillow, folded her hands across her breast, and gently fell asleep and breathed no more. M.
