Sanford ZEIGLER, Former State Senator, Dies

Sanford ZEIGLER Jr., 73, who served this community over a long period of years as a public official, died early this morning in Hollywood Memorial hospital in Hollywood, Fla. His death came at 1:30 a.m.

ZEIGLER suffered a stroke on May 29, and a severe coronary attack on June 7 from which he never rallied.

He and his daughter, Virginia, moved to Dania, Fla., a year ago. Other than that he had spent his entire life in this community.

**Public Offices**
ZEIGLER had served the public through all three levels of government, county, state and national. His experience dated back to 1913 when he started in his first public office. At that time he was named director of the Southeastern Iowa Horticulture association and served as its vice president in 1915.

For the next two years he served as secretary of the Jefferson county Agricultural association and fair.

From 1919 to 1923 he was clerk of the district court for Jefferson county, from 1922 to 1936 he was chairman of the GOP Central committee and was appointed to the county board of supervisors in 1921.

In 1932 he was named chairman of the First District GOP committee, and in 1935 was elected state representative. He served two terms as state senator from this district, 1937-1943, and from 1943 to 1955 he served as a member of the Iowa Highway Commission. He was chairman of the commission five of the 12 years.

On Nov. 7, 1955 he was appointed branch manager of the Small Business Administration office at Davenport. He retired from that post Aug. 30, 1957.

Also through the years he served in other capacities. From 1926 to 1934 he was a director of the Iowa State Savings bank. From 1927 to 1934 he was also a director of the Iowa Loan and Trust company.

In 1940 he was listed in Who's Who in Iowa, and in 1954 was listed in Who's Who in America. In 1944 he served as a member of the Clinton Bridge commission.

Down through the years, when not serving full time in public office, he was associated with his father and brothers in the produce business here in Fairfield.

**Born In 1891**
"Pooch" ZEIGLER, as he was known by his many friends here, was born Sept. 27, 1891 in Fairfield, the son of Sanford and Ella BOWER ZEIGLER. He was reared and educated in this community and attended the Parsons Academy.

He was united in marriage on Nov. 28, 1912 in Fairfield to Erma FISHER. She preceded her husband in death on July 1, 1961 (sic. July 17, 1961).

ZEIGLER was a retired farmer, a member of the Methodist church, B.P.O. Elks, Masons, Consistory, Commandery and Shrine.

In addition to his daughter, Virginia, former teacher in the Fairfield Community school system, ZEIGLER is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Raymond ZEIGLER, Fairfield; Clarence "Monty" ZEIGLER, Des Moines; Mrs. Clarence GORMAN, Ariel ZEIGLER, Mrs. Harold HALLBERG, Mrs. A.H. SINGLEY and Mrs. W.B. GRIFFIN, Jr., all of Fairfield. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The body is being returned to the Raymond funeral home where last rites are pending.

ZEIGLER Rites Will Be Monday

Funeral services for Sanford ZEIGLER Jr., former state senator from Jefferson county, will be held Monday, June 14, at 11 a.m. in the First Methodist church. The Rev. James W. Dendler will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

The casket will be taken from the Raymond funeral home to the church at 10 a.m.

ZEIGLER passed away early Friday morning in Memorial hospital in Hollywood, Fla., where he had suffered a severe coronary attack on June 7. He had been hospitalized earlier because of a stroke.

ZEIGLER was preceded in death by his parents, his wife who died in July, 1961, and a brother, Harold, who died in Portland, Oregon.
