"Fairfield Daily Journal", Apr. 5, 1909, Pg. 3, Col. 2

MARCH HISTORY. David SHEWARD, who was at one time deeply identified with the history of the county, died at Council Bluffs and was brought to Fairfield for burial on the 5th. Mr. SHEWARD in the early part of 1864 edited a paper at Fairfield called "The Constitution & Union", which by its acrid criticisms of the prosecution of the war, offended the men in the field, and on Feb. 6th, a number of men on veteran furlough destroyed the printing office and with indignities to Mr. SHEWARD.
