HAS PLACE IN IOWA HISTORY. Samuel JACOBS, a man who was known to all the earlier settlers of Jefferson County, died at his home in St. Joseph, Mo., the 5th inst.. Mr. JACOBS came to Jefferson County in 1847 as a civil engineer in the employ of the government, and resided here until early in the '60s.... He was married in this county to Miss Maria MYERS, a foster daughter of the late Alexander FULTON, who is yet living.... His body was buried at Hamburg, his home before removing to St. Joseph, Monday.
The "St. Joseph Gazette" gives this interesting sketch of the life of Mr. JACOBS: Pioneer railroad man, newspaper publisher and politician, and a descendant of the first Quakers to land on American soil, died at his residence, 21st and Felix Streets, yesterday. Eighty-two years old. Two of his ancestors, John and Richard JACOBS, came to the U.S. with William Penn and their father was an intimate friend of the illustrious founder of Pennsylvania.
Samuel JACOBS was born in Harrisburg, Pa., Mar. 7, 1821. He was the maternal grandson of Gen. John Andre and Mary HARRIS HANNA. His grandfather was a descendant of Major ANDRE. His grandmother was the daughter of John HARRIS, the founder of Harrisburg....
He had six daughters, who are yet living, Mrs. S. F. HASKINS lives at Peoria, Ill.; Mrs. H. M. BORCHERS at Hamburg, Ia.; Mrs. A. L. MAXWELL at Portland, Ore.; Mrs. J. V. JACOBS at Chillicothe, Mo.; Misses Sarah H. and Henrietta H. JACOBS live at the family residence....
