"Fairfield Ledger", Mar. 26, 1884, Pg. 3, Col. 6

DEATH OF J. M. HUGHES... Mr. HUGHES was the eldest son of R. S. HUGHES, at one time superintendent of schools of this county, and who died in Des Moines about two years ago.

He was born in Brooks County, Virginia, July 8, 1841. In 1855 the family removed to Iowa, remaining one summer at Keokuk, and then removing to this county... When President Lincoln's call for troops was made, HUGHES was among the first in this county to respond. He enlisted in Co. E, of the famous 2d Iowa, was mustered into the state service May 5th, 1861, and into the U.S. service June 28th, 1861. Mr. HUGHES enlisted as a private soldier and continued in the ranks until he was appointed regimental wagonmaster and afterwards post wagonmaster at Pulaski, Tenn.. In June, 1864, his term of enlistment having expired, he was mustered out at Pulaski. The boys went to Louisville, Ky., to be paid off, and HUGHES and J. W. MESSICK returned to Pulaski. Both were venturesome spirits, and again entered the service as scouts under Gen. STARKWEATHER.... On March 24, 1867, in Keokuk County, Mr. HUGHES was married to Miss Faith A. MILLS, daughter of R. S. MILLS, of Brighton, who survives him.

Four children were born to them. One died in infancy, and three, Charley, Bert and Mary, the eldest 15, the youngest 10, are now with their mother... Interred with Masonic honors... The body was carried from the house to the grave by his old army comrades, as he had requested in his last moments....
