SAM C. FARMER, JR.
By R. J. Wilson

The funeral services, attendent upon the final departure of one once familiarly and always favorably known--to a yet remaining circle of friends in this city--a Samuel C. FARMER, Jr., were held at the time and place of the previous announcement in the Fairfield Daily Ledger (3 o'clock p.m. from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joel F. FARMER, 907 West Grimes street. The impressive services were as conducted by Dr. C. L. Tennant of the First Methodist Episcopal church, Fairfield, Iowa, with the added theeto (sic) impressiveness of a vocal solo rendered by Miss Cora Ball. The pall bearers present and acting in furtherance of that remaining to be done in consummation of the altogether purpose of then address, and song, and floral tribute and assembled friendship, were: Hon. William S. Long, Messrs. R. B. Louden, Sr., V. A. Lamson, Frank Cummings, Edward C. Peterke, and James F. Wilson, Jr.

Samuel Carter FARMER, Jr., was born in Wheeling, Virginia, October 29, 1852, being the second of three children and elder of the two sons born in that state to Samuel C. and Mary Jane FARMER. When he was four years of age the family removed from said native state to a farm near Salina, Jefferson county, Iowa, and such remained the adopted home until 1862, when permanent residence was taken up in the county seat. He was educated in the private and public schools of Fairfield, supplemented by attendance for a brief period upon the Mt. Pleasant Military Academy on the Hudson in the state of New York. This latter, perhaps, accounts for his always deep interest in military affairs. He was identified with the early formation of a military organization in this city after the complete passing of the War of the Rebellion. The attest of personal excellence attained in this avocation is plainly read in his election and service as colonel in the Fifth regiment, Iowa national guard from 1874 to 1878.

He was married in 1872 to Miss anna Cora CAMPBELL to which union were born three children, Anna, the eldest, lived only about one year. The thus remaining members of the immediate family are Elizabeth FARMER and Edward Campbell FARMER, both of Muskegon, Michigan. Mrs. FARMER departed this life December 25, 1917. There are two grandchildren--Edward Campbell FARMER, Jr. and Samuel Carter FARMER the III. One brother, Joel F. FARMER of this city survives him, also, a nephew, Edward Bright EHLE whom Mr. and Mrs. FARMER had taken, when a child, to raise.

He spent his life in business. He was connected with S. C. Farmer & Sons, private bank here and about the same time was associated with the establishment and operation of the Fairfield Furniture company. In 1884, or possibly in 1885, he moved to Chicago, where he remained for some eleven years as a trusted employee in banking institutions of that city. In 1905, he removed to Muskegon, Mich., and in recent years has been connected with the well known Browne, Morse Manufacturing company.

He died at his home in Muskegon on the morning of the 22 inst. His death came with added suddenness to the home circle, since he was thought to have passed the crisis of an attack of pneumonia and thus to be in a fair way to a speedy and entire recovery.

In boyhood, and both of us in possession possibly of our first shot guns and on a like hunting trip, he demonstrated to the writer the possession of an absolutely unselfish nature akin to purest generosity. And the oft recurring memory of the deed and the circumstance of its taking place have grown brighter as the years have come and gone. It became the center of an enduring friendship and unfaltering faith in the personal integrity of Samuel C. FARMER, Jr.

The home is the foundation, better perhaps to say, the footing course underneath the foundation of all duly organized society. Samuel C. FARMER, Jr., was a home man, where he the more fully confirmed the dominant train disclosed in boyhood's hunting trip. The unfeigned hospitality of his home as now and then extended to the writer, as well as to his daughter while she was pursuing her vocal and instrumental instruction in Chicago, constitute a happy and ineffaceable memory of the FARMER home, at the Alta Vista Terrace in the great metropolis, and as it is known to have continued to others in the instant likeness in Muskegon, Michigan.

He was a lover of good books and from the reading of such he was an unusually well informed man. And always seemed to be on the lookout for some item that might be of possible interest to the friend and correspondent of boyhood days. In a letter, not more than three years ago, he called attention to a book publication relating to the now fast receeding Abraham Lincoln period. In this book he had read an account of a controversy between Edwin M. Stanton, the great secretary of war and the then congressman from the first congressional district of Iowa, over the removal of an unjust charge of desertion against an Iowa soldier. The account is worth reading and loses nothing in interest, since the outcome was that the great secretary of war finally and graciousl ycame (sic) across. To Samuel C. FARMER, Jr., the Fairfield Public library is indebted for the gift of a copy of this interesting work.

Does the reader desire a glance into the mind and heart of the veritable Samuel C. FARMER, Jr.? Then, in hastening conclusion, obtain it from the closing lines of a letter to the new writer, being date of October 29, 1923.

"Today I have reached the 71 milestone in life's march. The end of h__ (his?) route, yet to come, but it will come--the readiness of all,"

"With kind regards to all,
"Your friend,
"S. C. FARMER, Jr."
