OBITUARY

MRS. JANE HOOPES

Sarah Jane HOOPES, widow of the late Dow HOOPES, was born in Jefferson county, September 29, 1848, being the daughter of the late Anthony and Rachel KELTNER DOWNING. At the early age of ten years she went to live with her grandfather KELTNER, and her aged and invalid grandmother and continued to care for them until both passed away.

In 1869 she was united in marriage to James GALLIHER, he being a nephew of James A. GALLIHER of Jefferson county. He was one of the three commissioners named by the Territorial Council of Iowa to locate the county seat of Monroe county, then called Kishkoboth and which was located at Albia, then called Princeton. Within a few months she was called upon to mourn the death of her young husband. To this union one daughter, Hattie E., now Mrs. W. E. GILTNER of Albia. In 1873 she was united in marriage to Ezra Dow HOOPES eight years after his honorable discharge from the Union army. She often referred to the happiness experienced by her in the companionship of the mother of her late husband, who made her home with them in her declining years. Her life has truly been a life of unstinted service, for there was never a call for help or aid in the lonely hours of sickness, but what Aunt Jane was at their bedside.

"Welcome" stood out plainly at the Hoopes home. And there are many left today who can attest to the good times that were always enjoyed there.

Aunt Jane, as she was well known here in Jefferson county, had a pleasing personality and once her friend always her friend. The aged and the youth, poor or rich made no difference to her. She was always a companion to them. After leaving the home farm, two miles east of the city, the family moved to Fairfield, but she still kept up her acquaintance with her old friends, and still made new ones. Her home here was still crowded every year with High school girls who were always loth to leave even after graduation for Aunt Jane was always a good advisor and a mother to them all. Her life was a life of unstinted loving service to all her friends. And it can be truly said "She hath not lived in vain."

In the early spring of 1919 our friend's health failed and on the 12th day of August she reluctantly gave up her Fairfield home and went to Albia to make her home with her daughter, who has always ministered to her as only a considerate mother and daughter can live for, and serve each other. Aunt Jane with her husband united with the M. E. church of Fairfield in 1874 and died in the full faith of that most consoling of all promises-- A place in the Mansions of Our Heavenly Father's Home.

Besides her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. GILTNER of Albia, she leaves to mourn her passing five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, also a host of friends.

On December 24, 1935, she suffered an ice fall. This ailment eventually proved fatal. Through her failing health she still remained cheerful and unselfish. Sociability and cheerfulness were characteristics of her always. And in the Lord's faith she fell into a peaceful sleep, to her a blessing and a benediction, at the good age of 87 years, 6 months and 19 days.

She was laid to rest beside her loved ones in the Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield.
