Death of John ECKERT.

John S. ECKERT, who departed this life Aug. 28, 1889, was born in Washington, Pa., Sept. 27, 1820, where he lived with his parents until about 1838, when he went to Indianapolis to finish his trade, that of a saddle and harness maker, with his brother William, who had preceded him and settled in that young and prosperous city. He and his brother went into the mercantile business and were so engaged until his brother died in 1851. The business was closed up, and after remaining in Indianapolis till about 1853, John came to Fairfield. He remained here until the fall of 1866, when he started west, stopping in Council Bluffs until the following year, when he proceeded to Helena, Montana. There he was engaged in mining, etc., until 1970 (sic - 1870), when he again returned to Fairfield, where he spent the remainder of his life in the insurance business, with the exception of a short time engaged at Perlee with the Jefferson County Coal Company.

For the last year his health has been declining, but not until last April did he appear much alarmed about his health. His friends became solicitous about his condition, and urged his removal to the house of his niece, Mrs. Mary YOUNG, where he remained, receiving every attention possible to bestow. He remained with Mrs. YOUNG until the 9th of July, when it was thought advisable to move him to the house of his brother James, it being more retired and quiet, and hopes were entertained that the change would be for the better; but disease had got too strong a hold upon him, and he continued to fail until his death. Mr. ECKERT was a Mason, having joined the order in Indianapolis and subsequently becoming a member of Clinton Lodge of this place. His funeral took place from the residence of his brother on the evening of the 29th and was largely attended, receiving the honor of a Masonic burial. Rev. J. F. Magill conducted the religious services.

During all the long years of his life in this community, John ECKERT wronged no man. He was the friend of all, and had the friendship of all in return. He was not an aggressive man; but he was a good man. He took little part in public affairs; but by his near friends he will be sorely missed.
