"Fairfield Ledger", March 4, 1896, Pg. 3, Col. 3

DAVID ACHESON IS DEAD. Resident of Fairfield for many years prior to 1880, died in Pittsburg, Pa., Thursday, Feb. 17... He was an accomplished musician and was engaged in the musical business for a greater portion of his residence here. He was engaged in the grocery business with James F. CRAWFORD for several years.

The Washington, Pennsylvania "Observer" gives the following sketch of his life: "Mr. ACHESON was the son of David and Mary ACHESON. His father was one of the merchants of Washington in its early history, and was a prominent and influential citizen. The subject of this notice was the youngest of a large family of children. He was born in Washington, where he spent his youth and early manhood. In 1853, at the age of 23 years, he was appointed postmaster and for four years thereafter administered the Washington post office, which was then kept in a building on the site of the Citizens National Bank. He had previously served as clerk in the post office under his predecessor, James McDermott. Subsequently he removed to the west and engaged in mercantile business in the town of Fairfield, Iowa. He married in 1863 Jennie, daughter of John CAREY, of Xenia, Ohio, who died in 1876, leaving him three children, all of whom survive, one son and two daughters. The son, John Carey ACHESON, is now a student of theology in the Danville Seminary. Of the daughters, Mary is a stenographer, employed in Philadelphia, and Nannie is a student at the Pennsylvania College for Women at Pittsburg. Mr. ACHESON has been invalid for some years as the result of paralysis. Latterly he has resided at Pittsburg. The oldest residents of Washington will remember him as a genial, companionable gentleman. Of his father's children but two now remain, the Hon. M. W. ACHESON, United States Circuit Judge, Pittsburg, and Mrs. Dr. BROWNSON, of this place. Among his brothers were the late Judge A. W. ACHESON, James C. ACHESON and George ACHESON of Fairfield, Iowa....."
