"Fairfield Ledger", Feb. 11, 1885, Pg. 3, Col. 4

DEATH OF JOHN CLINTON. The remains of John CLINTON, a Jefferson County pioneer, were brought to this city for interment on Saturday last. His death occurred at the home of his son-in-law, C.D. SHADFORD, at Agency City, the day previous, where deceased had been making his home for some years. The direct cause of his death was Bright's disease, and he had taken to his bed but two or three days before his death.

He was born in Fayette County, Penn., November 23d, 1798, and in the same county, May 1st, 1823, was married to Sarah CRABS, who survives him. Eleven or twelve children were born to them, nine of whom are now living.

In 1843, Mr. CLINTON, with his family, removed from Ohio to Iowa, settling on a farm one mile north of this city, where he resided 28 years, when failing health and strength compelled him to cease labor. He then removed to this city, where he resided about eight years. Since that time he and his wife have made their home with their children, and had been at Agency for 15 months past. While living in Ohio, 43 years ago, Mr. CLINTON became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and has ever been a faithful and devoted Christian...

His remains were interred in the City Cemetery at this place Saturday evening, Rev. Miller, of Agency City, and Rev. M. Bamford, pastor of the M.E. Church of this city, conducting the services.... Mr. and Mrs. C. D. SHADFORD, Agency; Mr. and Mrs. John URIE, Ottumwa; and Mrs. Phebe CARTER, Mt. Ayr, were all the children who were able to be present at the funeral.
