Was 86 Years Old And The Last Of The Family Of The Late Joseph BALLMrs. Alexander R. BURNS, the last member of the family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob BALL died yesterday at her home north of Ottumwa after a lingering illness of many months (note: in Wapello Co., IA).
Funeral services will be held at the Christian church here tomorrow afternoon at 2 oclock and will be conducted by Rev. George Marsh of Ottumwa and Rev. R. H. Polly, pastor of the Fairfield church.
Mrs. BURNS was born in Brooks county, Virginia, Madrch (sic) 16, 1838 and came to Jefferson county with her parents in 1854. She was the sister of the Hon. George W. BALL and the late W. C. BALL. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Margaret BURNS, who attended her mother faithfully all these years. Her husband preceded her in death three years ago (sic - seven years ago, in 1917).
Mrs. BURNS was a life long member of the Christian church.

Mrs. A. R. BURNS.
Cynthia H. BALL, daughter of Joseph and Margaret BALL, was born in New Cumberland, West Virginia, March 16, 1838, and departed this life March 31, 1924 at the age of 86 years and 15 days, at the old home farm east of Ottumwa.
She came with her parents to Fairfield in 1854, where she resided on a farm until her marriage with Gilbert KIRKPATRICK September 1, 1863, who departed this life one year later.
She was again united in marriage November 17, 1868, A. R. BURNS of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After a residence of three years in Pennsylvania, they moved to the old home farm, where they lived for over half a century, he preceding her in death December 22, 1917, at the age of 82 years.
She was united with the Christian church when thirteen years of age and lived a consistent Christian life for 73 years, until she was called home.
She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter, Margaret at home, one son, Robert and wife and little granddaughter Roberta and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Fairfield Christian church Wednesday afternoon, April 2 at 2 o'clock, and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. George Marsh of Ottumwa, assisted by Rev. R. H. Polly of the Fairfield Christian church.
She was the last of a notable family in Jefferson county. Her father was Hon. Joseph BALL, who was a lineal descendant of Mary BALL, the mother of George WASHINGTON. Her mother was Margaret LANGFITT, a cousin of James K. POLK. They came to Iowa in 1854. Their other children were: Sarah Ann FREEMAN, Martha Jane BURNS, Hannah Amanda STEVER, Cynthia Coulter BURNS, Anna Harrison LEWIS, John Franklin BALL, who enlisted in the fall of 1861 in Co. B, 19th Iowa Infantry and lost his life at Prairie Grove, Ark.; William Clay BALL, George Washington BALL, and Mary SPEILMAN.
Owing to the bad condition of the roads, the pastor could not reach the home the morning of the funeral, but neighbors gathered together and conducted a brief and beautiful service. Two sang, one offered prayer and another gave a short and touching eulogy.
