Mrs. Elizabeth McGiffin Cheney, 83, pioneer resident of Montana and member of an early Iowa newspaper family, died recently in Portland, Oregon. Spent most of her life in Judith Basin County near Stanford, Mont. Funeral held in Stanford. Born November 10 1885 in Montana, daughter of Nat and May Junkin McGiffin. Following the death of her mother, she spent a few years in Fairfield in the home of her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Junkin. Sister of W.J. and Don McGiffin. Grad. FHS 1900, returned to Montana. Long career as a rural school teacher. Dec. 16 1903 married Ambrose V. Cheney, Montana rancher and an associate of Charles M. Russell, famed cowboy artist. Seven sons and one daughter. She continued to teach school; the school was located in the Cheney ranch yard. At the time of his death, Ambrose Cheney was one of the last cowboys who had ridden Montana's open range; he died July 13 1964 age 90...She is survived by children: Charles Cheney, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Carl Gunderson, Havre, Mont.; D.L. Cheney, Seattle, Wash.; Dr. Truman Cheney, Fort Meade, S.D.; William Cheney, Helena, Mont.; Bernard Cheney, Bellingham, Wash.; and Thomas Cheney, New York, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by one son, one sister and three brothers.
