Frank L. McCLAIN, Businessman For Many Years, Dies

Frank L. McCLAIN, retired Fairfield businessman, passed away at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson County hospital following a long illness. He had been a patient at the hospital for the past 15 weeks.

A life-long resident of this community, he was actively engaged in business for many years and took an active part in church and community affairs.

In later years he operated the Fairfield Beverage company until ill health caused him to retire. Before entering that business he had operated a cleaning establishment for several years and prior to that he was in the ice and cold storage business.

He was a member of the First Methodist church, the Masonic lodge and was a member of the board of directors of the Evergreen Cemetery association. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce while he was in business.

Last rites will be Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Methodist church with Dr. L. L. Weis in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body will remain at the Weston Behner Funeral home until 9 a.m. Tuesday at which time it will be taken to the church.

Masonic services will be conducted at the grave.

Frank L. McCLAIN, 74, was born April 9, 1880, in Jefferson county, the son of the late Albert T. and Mary Catherine MANATREY McCLAIN. He attended local schools and was graduated from Iowa State college at Ames in 1903 as an electrical engineer.

He was united in marriage to charlotte I. OGDEN on Oct. 14, 1910. She preceded her husband in death on June 12, 1952.

Surviving are one son and one daughter, Carl T. McCLAIN, Cedar Rapids; and Mrs. Julia SAUNDERS, Decatur, Ill. He is also survived by five grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. W. H. NEIBERT, Fairfield.

Besides his wife, Mr. McCLAIN was preceded in death by a son, George, who was lost at sea June 11, 1943, when he crashed in a military aircraft during World War II; his parents and one sister.
