J. HENDERSON VOORHIES DIED SATURDAY.

...One of the best known of the old settlers of Fairfield... At his home on West Jefferson Street... Born in Elizabethown, New Jersey, July 22, 1823, and when a child moved with his parents to Ohio where his youth was passed. He came to Iowa, locating at Fairfield, and here on May 19, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Sue S. JEWETT. Immediately after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. VOORHIES went to Keokuk to make their home. There Mr. VOORHIES engaged in business and he was very successful. Several years later they moved to Marshall County and after residing there a few years returned to Fairfield in 1877 to make their home. For a time Mr. VOORHIES was engaged in the mercantile business here, afterward he opened a flouring mill which he conducted until about 10 years ago when he was forced to retire from active labor on account of failing health. The mill is still known as Voorhies Mill, but is operated by a son, F. W. VOORHIES. Four children, two sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. VOORHIES. Of these a daughter has already preceded her father in death. The aged wife and three children are left to mourn the death of a good man. The children are: Frank W. VOORHIES of this city; Mrs. John H. SPEILMAN of Chicago, and Wilbur VOORHIES of California.

Mr. VOORHIES was born of Quaker parents and was brought up in that faith. When a young man he united with the Congregational Church in Ohio... Evergreen Cemetery.
