WILLIAM G. ALLISON

William G. ALLISON, a life long resident of the State of Iowa, passed away December 7, 1939, at his home one-half mile south of this city at the age of ninety years and three days. Mr. ALLISON was perhaps one of the oldest residents of this county, and had enjoyed good health up until about 2 years prior to his demise.

Mr. ALLISON was born December 4, 1849, at Fairview, Hancock county, Virginia, the son of Ross and Mary ALLISON. He is the last of a family of five boys and three girls. His parents came to Iowa in 1852 by taking a boat from Liverpool, Ohio, to Cairo, Illinois, and then up the Mississippi to Keokuk. They settled at Blakesburg, Iowa, and later moved to Dahlonega. Mr. ALLISON was a young man worked hard in his chosen profession of farming, and married Miss Rebecca HANDY on Nov. 29, 1877. His wife died Feb. 29, 1880, leaving him with one son, George. He later married Miss Ella CUNNINGHAM on Feb. 5, 1882, and they went to housekeeping on a farm at Highland Center. They later moved to Hedrick, and from there to a farm north of Libertyville, where they resided nine years.

Mr. ALLISON then decided to retire from active farming, and moved to his present home one-half mile south of Fairfield, where he passed away.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Ella ALLISON and his five sons and one daughter, namely: George at home; John of Libertyville; Ray of Kansas City; Charlie of Fairfield and Fred of Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois, and Marie of Chicago, along with a number of grandchildren and one great-grandchild and other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Hoskins Funeral Home in charge of Rev. William R. Yingling of the Presbyterian church. He was laid to rest at Fell Cemetery in Libertyville, Iowa, on Dec. 10, 1939.

(Wm. Gibson ALLISON's mother's maiden name not shown on Death Record. The record of his second marriage, probably in Wapello County, might give it.)

Admin. note: I originally transcribed an abbreviated version of this obituary. In September, 2012, the complete transcription above was provided by Sherri Meck (shlymeck@att.net) who extensively researches the ALLISON lineage. The full version was not posted to Keokuk or Wapello county.
