J. H. CUMMINGS (James Horace) was born one and one-half miles east of Fairfield on Sept 25 1861. He is 78 years old, and has lived all his life in this county. His father, William Cummings, was one of the “forty niners” of Jefferson County, leaving here as a young man to go with a company of 96 men to the Gold Rush in California. It took the company about six months to reach California. Mr. Cummings walked all the way to California, driving an ox team as he walked. He swam every river and stream between here and his destination, and encountered many Indians. He returned to this county in a few years, and settled here, having been unsuccessful in his search for gold.
