FHS Class of 1963
The Fairfield High School Class of 1963 held its 55th-year class reunion the weekend of Sept. 14-15, with 68 classmates in attendance.
Friday was set aside for time with family and friends, as out-of-town classmates returned to Fairfield and preparations were set in place at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Activities Building.
The fairgrounds was also the location of the traveling Vietnam War Memorial Replica "Healing Wall" throughout the weekend and open to the public 24 hours a day. Fairfield's American Legion Post No. 47 Auxiliary was instrumental in bringing this exhibit to the Fairfield community.
The fairgrounds was the venue for the class to "meet, greet, eat and remember" Friday and Saturday nights. The evening meals were prepared and served by the Jefferson County Fair Board.
A social time preceded the Friday evening kickoff meal, which was typical of pre-football game food eaten by teenagers in the '60s: sloppy joes, chips, salad, dessert and a cold drink.
Before the meal, Carol TEETER WELLS shared a "Reunion Prayer." Ron HUNERDOSSE, retired FHS educator and volunteer and fundraiser shared information about the Trojan Plaza and a new FHS project: the Trojan Honor Courtyard to be located at the front entrance to the auditorium.
Many classmates continued visiting at the fairgrounds, while others headed to FHS Trojan Stadium to attend the FHS vs Grinnell football game and to watch the FHS Marching Band. The Trojan football team was victorious.
Saturday provided many activities for classmates, friends and families. Several took advantage of the Kiwanis Kids' Day and ate a pancake breakfast in Central Park and watched the Kids Day Parade. Others met for coffee or lunch, shopped the shops on the square or toured Jefferson County before meeting at the high school for a tour of FHS led by Activities Director Jeff COURTRIGHT.
Classmates also visited the Carnegie Historical Museum.
Saturday evening's event began with a social time before gathering for a class photo.
Orville BROWN served as master of ceremonies. Gene and Lori HOYLE offered grace in word and song before the meal, prepared and served by the fair board.
Sandy BRUEY NELSON designed a display of her school days memorabilia which celebrated the lives of 38 deceased classmates. During the Time of Remembrance, she shared a poem, "The Empty Chair" which had been incorporated in the display; followed by reading each departed classmates' name.
Classmates who served in the U.S. Military Armed Forces were recognized for their service.
Senior Class President Lyle DUNBAR conducted a class meeting. Those present voted to meet again in October 2023. DUNBAR thanked the "Lunch Bunch" committee for their efforts in planning and preparation of the 55th year reunion.
Mame ZIMMERMAN read a note from British AFS student Pauline ASHMAN OAKHILL sending her regrets and "best wishes" for the 55th-year reunion.
BROWN ended the evening's program by sharing some "academic records" held by the FHS Class of 1963 for 45 years.
Classmates stood and sang the FHS Alma Mater and then spent the rest of the evening visiting.
