DIED—August 24th of Consumption, in the 22d year of her life, MARY JANE WARD, wife of NOAH H. WARD, of the Iowa Second. She was born in Jacksonville, Ill., …Her kind husband hurried home from his regiment to see her die. She has left a little babe, kind mother, and other friends who mourn her absence. Her funeral discourse was preached from the last chapter of Revelations, at her request……

National Archives: 15 Apr. 1897, Declaration for Pension. NOAH H. WARD, Co. E, 2nd Iowa Vol. Inf. Reg., is a resident of Caney, Montgomery County, Kansas, aged 60 years. In line of duty contracted Asthma at or near Nashville, Tenn., winter of 1864; during fight at Nashville and Pursuit of Hood contracted severe cold; Bronchitis; Muscular Rheumatism, marching in pursuit of Hood, wading rivers, swamps and the mud and inclement weather. Since leaving service has resided in Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Indian Territory. Occupation has been that of a Teacher and Minister of the Gospel. Was enrolled a Painter.

20 May 1898. Present wife was ADA SMITH; married 23 Sept. 1896 at Butler, Bates Co., Mo. Previous wife, SARAH E., died in 1887 at Fredonia, Kansas—“she was the mother of my children.” Children living: JOHNIE M. and CLARA L.; JOHNIE was born March/68; CLARA Sept. 24/75. They are now residents of Spokane, Wash. CLARA is now MRS. WILCOX, whose husband is connected with U. S. Navy.

26 Sept. 1916. Declaration for Widow’s Pension: Keystone, Pawnee County, Oklahoma. NOAH WARD died July 6th (or 26th) 1898 at Otto, Courtny County, Kansas. MRS. ADA WARD declares she is 84 years of age, born May 9, 1832 at Randolph County, North Carolina. NOAH WARD had been previously married, in Fairfield, Iowa; his wife died in 1863. Her first husband, A.W. BAKER, died in Nov. 1877; she married H. H. SMITH in 1880, who died 1894 at Virgil, Kansas.
