Page 3, col. 5.FROM CALIFORNIA. A letter from MR. W. D. SCOTT, dated San Francisco, June 7, informs us that he arrived there safely on the 13th of April, after a very pleasant trip. He reports times lively, with carpenter’s wages at $3.50 to $4; laborers $2 per day; farm hands $30 to $45 per month; board, $4 per week; board and lodging, $6. He reports strawberries, cherries, apricots, cabbage, green corn, peaches, apples and almost anything that one could ask for, in market. The weather is pleasant and cool. He reports many grand sights on the Pacific Coast, and many remarkable places in ‘Frisco, among them Woodward’s Gardens.
(Letter, 1964)
Letter from Mr. J. O. DONAHOE dated Aug. 28, 1964: “This story always intrigued me. This (WILSON DAVIDSON) SCOTT went to California to hunt Gold. I have heard this expression used a hundred times in connection with this SCOTT. At any rate, he seems to have done well, and secured a job in the U. S. Mint while the mint was in San Francisco. The Scotts were great favorites of my grandfather, Alfred G. Webb, and on his deathbed, he frequently asked if we had heard from the Scotts, as that was the time of the earthquake in ‘Frisco. In a few weeks we heard that they were unharmed, but Grandfather had already passed on. And as late as 1920, my mother visited some of these Scotts in San Francisco, and told me how royally she had been entertained by them.”
