REUNIONS

Victory No. 8 School

Twenty former students and descendants or friends of students, shared memories, old country-school entertainment, and refreshments at the 126th anniversary reunion of Lockridge Victory No. 8 School east of Four Corners.

Attendees included the following students and descendants of Sam VORHIES: Lea BRADLEY; Juanita GREIST with husband Bill; Roberta MATTSON plus daughter Lori with her granddaughter Emerson, and son Craig with wife Becky and daughters Kendra and Kim. Sam VORHIES and his 13 siblings all attended Victory No. 8 School built in 1891.

Also attending were former students and descendants of Victor SWANSON, an original Victory No. 8 School board member: Gloria SWANSON MESSER and her brother, Bob SWANSON.

Others in attendance were Merle VORHIES, son of former No. 8 student Verne VORHIES, with wife, Darlene; and Deb REMICK, daughter of former student Maxine JOHNSON BRENAMAN.

Regrets were received from former teacher Elaine BAESE and former student LaVon HOSTETLER.

President Thelma SMIDDY conducted the business meeting during which memorials were approved for former teacher Erma HOEFFER and former student Rollie ZIHLMAN. Secretary Gloria MESSER reported the structural and painting work completed, thanks to a grant of $1,950 from the Greater Jefferson County Foundation. Those present encouraged additional grant applications to complete further work needed on the school and grounds. Roberta MATTSON was commended for again cleaning the school for the reunion, and her grandsons were praised for upkeep of the lawn.

Elected as co-presidents were Lori FRY and Becky MATTSON, and MESSER was re-elected as secretary for the coming year.

A old country-school play was acted out by former students, followed by potluck desserts brought by all attending.
