Crash near Batavia claims Fairfield man

BATAVIA - A young Fairfield man was killed in a two-car crash at the intersection of two gravel roads north of Batavia today.

James Stacey McCLELLAN, 19, son of Loy and Patricia McCLELLAN of 1500 South D St., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Dr. Terry Cochran, acting Jefferson County medical examiner.

McCLELLAN was a passenger in an Oldsmobile driven by Kevin Wayne FOREMAN, 19, of Batavia. Both men were thrown from the westbound car after it was hit broadside by a car driven by Mindy Sue WAGNER, 19, of Batavia.

WAGNER was reported in critical condition at noon at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where she was airlifted from Jefferson County Hospital. FOREMAN was listed in fairly good condition at Jefferson County Hospital.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that FOREMAN may have run a posted stop sign at the intersection. WAGNER's Dodge Omni was southbound when the vehicles crashed at 6:45 a.m. three miles north of Batavia at an intersection known as Cottonwood Corner.

WAGNER's car ended in the west ditch. FOREMAN's vehicle rolled several times before coming to a stop on its wheels 50 feet into a corn field.

Both the state patrol and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department were at the accident scene. Charges are pending in the accident, according to a state trooper.

This is the third fatal traffic accident and the fourth fatality in Jefferson County in 19 days.

McCLELLAN, a 1990 graduate of Fairfield High School, was employed at Wal-Mart and was a student at Indian Hills Communtiy College. He was en route to Indian Hills at the time of the crash. FOREMAN lives in rural Batavia, north of Highway 34. He is the son of Kenneth and Judy FOREMAN.

Final arrangements for McCLELLAN are pending at the Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.
