BATAVIA - A 2-year-old Batavia boy was killed Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 34, two miles east of Batavia.
Zachary D. HUMBLE was pronounced dead at the scene from head injuries after the 11:25 a.m. accident, which was caused by an icy patch on the highway.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Carole M. FISHER, 52, Ottumwa, was eastbound when her 1988 Dodge Caravan lost traction and slid across the roadway, into the path of a westbound 1989 Toyota driven by 35-year-old Karen HUMBLE of Batavia.
HUMBLE's vehicle struck the passenger side of FISHER's van, which was crossways in the road.
Karen HUMBLE, and Larry Jayson HUMBLE, 29, were taken to Ottumwa Regional Health Center by ambulance, while Sam HUMBLE, 5, and FISHER were transported to Jefferson County Hospital.
Karen and Sam HUMBLE were flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Karen HUMBLE was listed in critical condition today, and Sam HUMBLE was in serious condition.
Larry HUMBLE was treated at the Ottumwa hospital and released. FISHER was treated for minor injuries at Jefferson County Hospital, held briefly for observation and then released.
The sheriff's department was assisted at the scene by the Fairfield Fire Department, RMMS ambulance, Ottumwa Regional ambulance, and the Wapello County Sheriff's Department.
