From Ex-Soldiers, Sailors & Marines Living in Iowa in 1886:
“Smith Ball served in the ‘Black Hawk War,’ as a private in ‘Moffatt Black Horse Cavalry, U.S.’”

From Portrait and Biographical Album, Jefferson & Van Buren Counties, Pub. 1890, p. 263-264:
“In 1831 he went on a campaign against the Black Hawk tribe, going as far as Rock Island. The following spring he was again engaged in Indian warfare, the campaign continuing eighty days, during which time two battles occurred, one on the Wisconsin River, and the other at Bad Ax, on the Mississippi.”

From The Fairfield Ledger, July 11, 1894, 3-1:
“An original widow’s pension has been granted Rebecca Ball of this city on account of her husband’s service in Indian wars.”
