“This grave also marked with a bronze plaque, official D.A.R.emblem and the words: “Real Daughter.” From other sources we learn that she was dau. of Henry Wells, b. 1754 Md.; d. 1814 Brooke Co., VA. (now W. Va.); his wife was Jemima Cole. Henry Wells served in the Rev. as Sergeant in Col. Burgess Ball’s Company, First Virginia Regulars commanded by Robert Parker in 1778.”

TO DEDICATE MARKER FOR PIONEER WOMAN.

Batavia -- The dedication service for the DAR Marker recently placed on the grave of Mrs. Editha WELLS PUMHREY in the Rominger Cemetery southeast of County Line, will be held in this cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Sunday May 17. The Ottumwa DAR Chapter will be in charge. Mrs. PUMPHREY was the daughter of Sgt. Henry WELLS, who served in Lieut. Col. Burgess Ball's Company of First Regular Volunteers during the Revolutionary War. She came to Iowa about 1843 and with her son, Serene Cromwell PUMPHREY, bought land from the government southwest of County Line. Wilbur PUMPHREY, a great-grandson, now lives on this farm. Mrs. PUMPHREY was born Oct 18 1783 at Wellsburg, W.Va., a town which her forefathers founded. She married Joshua PUMPHREY Aug 21 1801, and they were the parents of 14 children... Mrs. J. J. ACTON and Mrs. Will COPELAND, living near County Line, are her granddaughters. Henry PUMPHREY of Fairfield is a grandson. Living in Batavia are Mrs. Frank HITE, who is a great-granddaughter, and Mrs. Mary HITE DAY, a great-great-granddaughter. Many other descendants live near Batavia....

DAR Nat. #19750. Mrs. Martha FEATHERSTON THRALL, born Mt. Sterling, Iowa; wife of Frank Brooks THRALL. Daughter of George FEATHERSTON and Rachel Editha PHILLIPS, his wife. Granddaughter of John PHILLIPS (1802-73) and Matilda PUMPHREY (1802-53), his wife, married in 1826. Great-granddaughter of Thomas PHILLIPS and Mary WHEATLY, his wife; Joshua PUMPHREY and Editha WELLS (1783-1858), his wife, married 1801. Great-great-granddaughter of Henry WELLS & Jemima COLE (1755-1819), his wife. Henry WELLS (1754-1814) was born Baltimore, Md.; grad. William & Mary College, served as sgt. in Co. Burgess Ball's Regiment; died in Wellsburg (Fort Wells), Va. (Mrs. Martha F. THRALL was Regent of the Elizabeth Ross Chapter, Ottumwa, Iowa, 1915-1918. She died ante 1946.)
