Fairfield woman killed in car-semi crash near Batavia

Monday, February 26, 1996BATAVIA - A rural Fairfield woman was fatally injured in a highway accident one-half mile west of Batavia Sunday afternoon.
Vicki Rae SCHIEDEL, 48, of 2153 175th St., was killed when her car crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer. She was reported to have been eastbound on Highway 34 when the Chevrolet Lumina she was driving crossed the center line into the path of a DCM Transport driven by Hank Leland, 58, of Monmouth, Ill. The car struck the rear trailer duals of the westbound semi at 4:37 p.m.
Leland told Wapello County sheriff's deputies that that he saw the car drifting into his lane and that the driver appeared to be slumped over the wheel. He said he was blowing the horn on the semi and was attempting to get his rig over as far to the north as he could.
SCHIEDEL's vehicle came to rest in the eastbound lane facing south. There were no other occupants in either of the two vehicles.
Investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and the Wapello County Sheriff's Department continues. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was also involved in the investigation. The Fairfield Fire Department responded with Jaws of Life equipment. The accident occurred just over the Jefferson County line in Wapello County.
Mrs. SCHIEDEL had been employed at Jefferson County Hospital for the past 15 years. She is survived by her husband, Don SCHIEDEL, who also is employed at the hospital. Obituary information is on page 10 of today's Ledger.
The fatality was the second in eight days on Highway 34 near Batavia. Two-year-old Zachary D. Humble of Ottumwa died in a crash 1 1/2 miles east of Batavia Feb. 17.
