The Fairfield Ledger, Oct. 3, 1963, p. 2, col.1. Mr.and Mrs. Clarence Switzer are observing their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 6. The Switzers have five children, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They are Frank Switzer of Burlington; Mrs. Ralph (Helen) Hird of Ottumwa; Mrs. Eldon (Eloise) Rogers of Tucson AZ; Mrs. August (Doris) Stukenberg of Des Moines and Warren Switzer who lives on the Switzer home place.
Clarence Switzer and Annie Duncan were married Oct. 8, 1913 at the bride's home, the old Duncan homestead. Katherine Duncan attended her sister and Martin Edwards of Albany NY, cousin of the groom was best man.
After a honeymoon trip the couple started housekeeping on the Switzer farm, which had already been in the family for many years. David Switzer came to Jefferson county from Carroll county MD, in 1842, as a government surveyor and laid out most of Jefferson county, and the city of Batavia. He entered the original Switzer farm in 1843, 120 years ago. To date four generations have lived on this farm and four generations of brides have come to live there. Sarah J. Keltner, bride of David Switzer was the first in 1843. Linorah B. Edwards, bride of Frank Switzer was the second in 1888; Mrs. Clarence Switzer was the third, 50 years ago; and the fourth bride was Mary Maxine Jones, Mrs. Warren Switzer, in 1943.
