CLARK (sic - CLARKE) to be inducted into hall of fame

The Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association, Fairfield First!, the Fairfield Volunteer Center, Fairfield Musicians Club and Carnegie Historical Museum will host their annual awards banquet Nov. 15 at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.

The social hour will start at 6:15 p.m., and dinner featuring all local foods by Top of the Rock Grille, will begin at 6:45 p.m. The gala awards ceremony will follow.

One of Fairfield's original Renaissance men, Dr. J. Fred CLARKE will be inducted into the Fairfield Entrepreneur Hall of Fame on the 100th anniversary of the Jefferson County Health Center.

Fairfield artist and Carnegie Historical Museum curator Mark Shafer will unveil CLARKE's hall of fame portrait and tell the story of his life and accomplishments.

"Dr. J. Fred CLARKE was a man of wide-ranging interests and outstanding accomplishments," said Shafer. "CLARKE's influence persists in the hospital he founded 100 years ago. Other significant community assets that bear his mark are the Fairfield Rotary Club, the Fairfield Golf and Country Club, the first in Iowa and west of the Mississippi and his signature Prairie-style home on South Main Street. On a national level, CLARKE is credited with creating a Women's Army Nursing with his much lauded 'Unit-R. This year's portrait weaves aspects of a truly distinguished man of vision and service into a single pictorial narrative."

Modern day renaissance men and women will be celebrated with the presentation of 2012 awards for Entrepreneur of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Fairfield Entertainer of the Year.

The awards will feature a new company that, while local in scope, represents a new generation of entrepreneurship founded in social responsibility and supporting the local economy.

The Fairfield Entertainer of the Year is an individual who is creativity in multiple art forms and has not only enriched the Fairfield community, but changed the way people look at themselves.

The 2012 Business Plan Competition winner for food-entrepreneurs will be announced. This company has a unique product that tastes great and revitalized brain chemistry and functioning. It presents a new generation of super foods. Fairfield has a growing natural foods cluster. Fairfield had the highest representation of any city in the county, per-capita basis, at the recent Expo East natural foods show in Baltimore with six companies represented.

Ken Ross, the CEO of Global ID, one of the founders of the Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association and a featured drummer at Fairfield Musicians Club events, will be the master of ceremony.

Danish pianist Werner Elmker will provide the entertainment with music and photos of Fairfield.

Top of the Rock Grille will provide an all-local, seasonal food gourmet banquet featuring caesar salad, French bread, Yoder Farms free-range chicken, butternut squash lasagna, roasted vegetables and pumpkin cheesecake.

The Fairfield Entrepreneurs Association has been active in the Fairfield community since 1989 and helped raise nearly $300 million of investment for local businesses, creating more than 4,000 new jobs in the process.

Fairfield First! is committed to supporting the local living economy in the region and has been the host of the annual Fairfield Local Economy Summit during the last five years.

The Fairfield Volunteer Center has created a volunteer network to support seniors, nonprofit organizations and people in need. All these organizations can be called role models for communities across Iowa and the United States.

Members of Fairfield Entrepreneur's Hall of Fame include A. K. Harper, William Louden, Dick Smith, Sen. "Jefferson Jim" Wilson, Lee Gobble and Ross Walker.

Previous Entrepreneurs of the Year include Tim Hawthorne, Hal Goldstein, Eric Schwartz, Ron Bovard, John and Brenda Narducci and Jim Belilove.

Fairfield First Awards have been given to Revelations Bookstore and Cafe, Radiance Dairy and Everybody's Whole Foods.

Mayor Ed Malloy has described this celebration as the "perfect celebration of entrepreneurship, history and creativity in Fairfield."

Tickets are $30 each, at The Chocolate Café or online at http://fairfield2012awardsbanquet.eventbrite.com.

The deadline for reservations is Friday.
