16 March 1871

John HARPER aged 81 years, resident of Round Prairie Township, made application for pension under Act of Feb. 14, 1871. Was enlisted and enrolled and volunteered as a teamster at Cincinnati, Ohio, in Captain James Moore's Company. He drove team out to Ft. Defiance - back and forth through the country carrying provisions for the Army. His Post Office is Wooster. *Rejected* "Having rendered his services as a hired teamster or civil employee and not as an enlisted or drafted man. Paid by Quartermaster as shown by report of BL Division. Rejected Apr. 25, 1872.

27 June 1878

Kizia HARPER, widow of John HARPER, applies for Pension under provisions of Sections 4736 to 4740 inclusive, Revised Statutes, Act of March 9, 1878. Her husband received honorable discharge at either Ft. Defiance or Cincinnati, Ohio; he served about 50 days. Full description of her husband, at time of enlistment: Aged about 22 years and 6 months; occupation Farmer; birthplace Butler co., Ohio; height about five feet 10 inches; hair dark color; blue eyes; fair complexion. She was married to John HARPER at Butler Co., Ohio on or about 28 December 1809 by Jacob Reeder, J.P.; her name before marriage was Kizia TAYLOR; neither had been married before. Places of residence since date of discharge: Butler Co., Ohio, about one year; Dearborn Co., Ind., about six years; Franklin Co., Ind., until about March 1841, then to Jefferson County, Iowa. Children: Elizabeth CUSTER, Wm. HARPER, Catherine POWELL, Robert HARPER, Rhoda Ann WALKER, John T. HARPER. (John gave marriage place as Hamilton Co., Ohio.)
